Siemens Industry has released a series of new and improved 30 mm Class 52 Pilot Devices that provide more control and flexibility on the plant floor.

“Apart from having more choice and an enhanced ability to find the device that does exactly what they want, the feature that end users are going to appreciate most from these new devices is their modularity,” says Kendra Kofler, Siemens Industry spokesperson. “We set out to make them easier to use, right from ordering through to installation and change-out down the road.”

The new 30 mm devices include:

  • Three Position Push-Maintained, Pull-Momentary
  • Two Position Twist to Release
  • Integrated LED Modules
  • Safety Certification EN 60947-5-5 for 2 Position Twist to Release and 2 Position Maintained Push-Pull Devices.

These new lighting modules, operators and lens can be ordered fully assembled or independently depending on customer requirements, says Kofler. “Pilots are communications devices. People rely on them to see machine state data at a glance. Is the machine on? Existing lenses may not show up well in cluttered automation environments, so each of these new devices are based on a ribbed concentric lens design which provides improved illumination distribution. Essentially, they are brighter and show up better.”

Customers also have numerous options regarding illumination technology, she adds. They can opt for traditional incandescent lights, energy saving LEDs, and extra bright cluster LEDs.

The one constraint with the product line, admits Kofler, is that it doesn’t play well with older generations of pilot devices. The main constraint from a product mix perspective is the fact that it is better to use devices from the same generation in a particular grouping. Similarly, in most cases you can’t mix components between one generation of device and another. “These devices were designed from inception to be more modular and offer customers with a higher standard of flexibility and ease of use than they had before so mixing them with older generations isn’t really effective.”
