Starting and stopping production is usually a much more complex process than most people think, says John Burns, a spokesperson for Siemens Industry. Moreover, starting again, once you stopped is a tremendously big deal. “That’s why you need as much control, responsiveness and intelligence as you can possibly get from your equipment – and especially from your motor starters.”
The latest member of Siemens’ motor starter family, the M200D, is designed to give users exactly that kind of high responsiveness and flexibility. The M200D is compact and highly ruggedized, sporting an IP65 rating, so it can be installed outside the control cabinet and closer to the motor than other starters. It features the ability to evaluate signals from temperature sensors mounted on the motor and relay those diagnostics to the SCADA system and is available as a direct or reversing motor starter and can use electronic or mechanical means to do its job so it is ideally suited to material handling or conveying applications with distributed control architecture such as those typically found in automotive lines and paint shops, airports and logistics/distribution operations.
The M200D also supports numerous communications protocols, including AS-Interface, PROFIBUS and PROFINET, making it easy to install in existing infrastructures.
“Regardless of the industry you are in, system and production downtimes almost universally entail enormous costs,” says Burns. “High availability, preventive maintenance and comprehensive diagnostics are critical to limiting downtime which is why modular design, a high degree of protection, IP65 and powerful bus systems frequently represent the backbone of conveyor technology systems. Motor starters are often the heart of these operations, which rely on a high number of drives, usually interlinked via a high performance communications protocol. The M22D has been designed from the ground up to fill this role.”
M200D features and advantages:
- Fast and fault-free mounting and commissioning thanks to plug-in technology and preassembled cables
- Considerably increased system availability thanks to comprehensive diagnostics concept and mature system monitoring
- Cost-favorable and fast device replacement in service cases thanks to modular starter concept and automatic reparameterization
