Safety System Adds AS-Interface Connectivity

Siemens Industry, Inc. has expanded its safety products, focusing on ease of installation and cost reduction. The new MSS Advanced base (Central) unit for the SIRIUS 3RK3 Modular Safety System now provides connectivity to AS-Interface network nodes.

Central modules in the Basic and Advanced versions are the centerpiece of the SIRIUS 3RK3 Modular Safety System, which lets users quickly and easily change configurations, altering the number of inputs and outputs with flexible expansion modules. The SIRIUS 3RK3 Modular Safety System can be applied for safety applications up to SIL 3 according to IEC 62061 and PL e according to ISO 13849-1 respectively.

AS-I connectivity gives MSS Advanced solid advantages over competitive modular systems. One is that distributed Safe input devices such as E-Stop switches on an AS-I network can be used in the safe shutdown program central unit. This greatly reduces wiring costs and allows for easy expansion later.

Another is that multiple MSS Advance central units connected to a common AS-I network can broadcast safe status signals over the network so a safe input on one MSS system can trigger a safe event on a different MSS system. AS-I products are typically inexpensive components that send only a few bits of information so they don’t need much network functionality.

The MSS Advanced unit also brings several other new features. One is remote configuration of Profibus, which can simplify setup when new nodes are added. An expanded instruction set also helps make setup and control easier. Up to 9 Expansion I/O modules can be added, giving users more capability for expansion.
