For nearly two decades, Siemens innovative SIMOCODE pro has proven itself as a reliable smart motor management solution, helping plant operators avoid costly shutdowns in the automation process. Now, Siemens Industry, Inc. addresses the concerns of human and machine safety with the introduction of SIMOCODE pro Safety.
“SIMOCODE pro Safety provides comprehensive protection, control and communication with motor circuits and process automation,” says John Burns of Siemens Industry’s Industry Automation division. “Having a solution that ensures the safe switch off of motors, fans, pumps, compressors, or similar applications is integral to the entire plant environment.”
SIMOCODE pro Safety is the only communication capable motor starter (up to 500HP) that can be controlled over a safe rated network (e.g., PROFISAFE) and meet safety applications up to SIL 3/PL e without the need for an additional external safety relay.
The traditional means of achieving distributed safety in motor control centers (i.e., safely shutting down multiple full voltage motors) is to install “safe rated” I/O in one section of the motor control center and then hardwire redundant safe outputs and standard inputs to each individual bucket. SIMOCODE pro Safety allows for direct connection to the safe network, and the redundant safe outputs and standard inputs are now provided locally in the bucket with a safe rated expansion module for SIMOCODE pro. This solution meets SIL3 or PL e safety requirements while lowering installation costs. It also provides the flexibility to shut down any motor or combination of motors to meet the requirements of a process or machine. Detailed diagnostic and operational data also reduces or eliminates unnecessary and costly downtime.
SIMOCODE pro Safety can be used in all industries requiring the safe shutdown (i.e., SIL 3 or PL e) of a full voltage motor. It will most frequently be used in process safety applications where the safe shut down of multiple motors has to be carefully choreographed based on the nature of the detected fault.
