New components with integrated security functions from the Siemens Industry Automation Division allow users to securely access remote stations for monitoring and maintenance.
Siemens expands its Industrial Communication Portfolio with the new Scalance M product family. The first device to be released in the Scalance M family is the Scalance M875. The M875 is a 3G/UMTS router designed to provide cost-effective, secure connections to Ethernet-based automation devices. The unit supports HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) and HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) enabling maximum data rates of 14.4 Mbit/s downlink and 5.76 Mbit/s uplink. This added bandwidth opens the door for applications with the M875, such as streaming video from remote sites.
The device is part of the Security Integrated concept from Siemens. This means the unit has a built in Firewall and can be used to establish an IPsec VPN tunnel to other security appliances in the Security Integrated portfolio. This allows users to establish secure remote connections over cellular networks to Ethernet-based automation networks.
The Scalance M875 features an integrated Ethernet port for connections on the remote site. Since communication on the remote site is based on Ethernet, the M875 can be used with any Ethernet based end device regardless of manufacturer. This flexibility allows users to deploy the M875 at remote sites for industry and near-industry applications. An ideal application for the Scalance M875 would be at supply station of a water utility company or mobile plants that have to be centrally monitored or controlled from a control center
